#Showbiz: 'Pulau' actress Ms Puiyi sets up scholarship fund

KUALA LUMPUR: With her childhood dream of becoming a surgeon dashed partly because she had lacked the funds to study medicine, local celebrity Ms Puiyi is now looking to help others in the same situation by offering a scholarship totalling US$1 mil (RM4.4 mil) to those in need.

The 24-year-old 'Pulau' actress announced this on her TikTok account yesterday.

"As someone growing up in the outskirts of Malaysia, my family was not privileged enough to fund my studies in medicine," said the actress and social media influencer whose real name is Siew Pui Yi.

With no access to funds to put her through medical school, she pursued business studies which had cheaper fees, and worked part-time as a fashion model.

"Now that I'm able to make a difference, I wish to give back to society by starting this scholarship to students who need it the most."

In partnership with an organisation, the MsPuiYi Scholarship Fund is open for students from around the world.

Each student will receive US$1,000 (RM4,400) to pursue whichever field they were interested in and they will also be provided with a hardship grant during their studies.

"There will also be a business startup grant upon graduation," she said.
