#Showbiz: Coco Lee dies at 48 [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese-American songstress Coco Lee died after attempting suicide over the weekend according to family members.

In an Instagram post, Ms Lee's sisters Nancy and Carol Lee said the 48-year-old had been suffering from depression for the last few years and attempted suicide on Sunday (July 2).

"Despite the best efforts of the hospital team to rescue and treat her from her coma, she finally passed away on 5 July, 2023z

"We are thankful to God for giving us such a kind angel. We know now she has gone to a happier place and no longer suffers from depression," said the two sisters.

They also took the time to express gratitude to the medical staff and asked for privacy for their family. 

"Although CoCo stays in the world for not long a time, her rays of light will last forever!" 

Lee's last post on her official Instagram was dated back in December 2022.

In the New Year's Eve post, she shared: "Love and faith – my two favourite words that I carry strongly in my heart which I desperately needed to get through this incredibly difficult year."

Nine photos were uploaded in the collection, including a photo of a transparent drainage bag attached to her torso indicating that she was going through a medical complication.

She also said on her account that her goal in 2023 was to share her life story and how she kept a positive attitude despite facing obstacles.

The Mandopop superstar got broke into the entertainment scene in 1994, starting her career in Hong Kong.

She was only 19-years-old at the time but was revered by many thanks to her strong vocals and impressive dance skills. Her showmanship even dubbed her as the "Mariah Carey of Asia".

In 1998, she was hired to sing the song "Reflection" for the Disney aminated adaptation of the Chinese folktale Mulan. The success of the movie and the song helped her reach global fame.

Other songs that Lee is best known for include Before I Fall In Love, A Love Before Time (soundtrack for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), True Lover, Do You Want My Love, Dao Ma Dan, Di Da Di and many more.

Over the years of her colourful musical career, she released albums in Mandarin, Cantonese and English.
