#Showbiz: Dramatisation of Usman Awang's poems at AP Art Gallery this Saturday

KUALA LUMPUR: Carrying on with their work of celebrating and honouring the creations of the national laureates, Pertubuhan Seni Nusantara and Crisscut Design is staging a theatre production and poetry recital night this Saturday.

Dubbed 'Pahlawan Sejati', the 30-minute production will be the dramatisation of selected compilation works of the late Datuk (Dr) Usman Awang, shared the producer Mariana Samsudin.

"The script for the production will be based on the poems Usman had composed in his lifetime, arranged by Iryanda Mulia Ramly, who is also the project director," she explained of the production which will be staged at AP Art Gallery in Taman Melawati here at 8.30pm on Nov 4.

"This will be our fifth year since we began the project of staging the works of our own national laureates.

"Only last week we staged the interpretation of Datuk Seri A. Samad Said's poem Rumah Kosong in Johor Baru," she said.

Using the grant she received from the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, Geran Sokongan Sektor Kebudayaan 2023, Mariana initially wanted to stage this production on Sept 16 (Malaysia Day), but since she missed it due to unforeseen circumstances, the ministry told her to go ahead with the project at later date.

"There's a lot of work involved in this kind of projects. Besides getting approval nods from the celebrated laureates (or their surviving kins), we also need to honour and respect the message originally meant in their works, which means we could not take it lightly when it comes to interpreting them to turn them into our staged productions," she explained.

Mariana also added that five poets, namely Ladin Nuawi, UGI Usman Gumanti Ibrahim, Rahman Bakri, Hariry Jalil, and Fazreen Mohd, have also been invited to recite poems prior to the theatre performance.

All are invited to watch the performance. Admission to the performance is free. For details, call 017-3167995.
