Sabah Art Gallery announces its 2024 exhibitions

KOTA KINBALU: THE Sabah Art Gallery (SAG) has announced its 2024 programme in celebration of its ruby jubilee and to pay tribute to its late founder Datuk Mohd Yaman Ahmad Mus.

All exhibitions and programmes listed will take place at Sabah Art Gallery. It operates from Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm.

Solo exhibition by Richard Lim (Jan 25 - March 24, 2024)

The celebration kicks off with a solo exhibition by Richard Lim, born Lim Meng Yong in 1943 in Melaka.

A pioneering artist in Sabah, Lim has been instrumental in transforming the art scene alongside Yaman since the 1970s.

Specialising in mural art, Lim's impactful creations, including the grand mural in the Sabah State Legislative Assembly, showcase his enduring commitment to the artistic landscape.

Solo Exhibition by Benedict Chong (Feb 8 - March 24, 2024)

Benedict Chong, a versatile artist mentored by Yaman in the '60s, will present a solo exhibition.

Chong's works often depict the scenic beauty of Mount Kinabalu, local flora and fauna and the daily activities of the people.

Notably, he holds a record for creating Malaysia's longest necktie, measuring an impressive 144 feet in 1987, using the batik technique.

KPTNS KE-39 programme (February until July 2024)

Running from February to July, the 39th Karya Perdana Tahunan Negeri Sabah (KPTNS) programme is an annual initiative aligned with the birthday celebration of Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.

This statewide art selection programme aims to enhance the quantity and quality of SAG's collection, fostering creativity and passion for the arts.

The theme, form and terms of entry will be unveiled in February.

Retak Pertujuh exhibition (March 28 - May 21, 2024)

The 31st Invitational Artists' Exhibition, titled "Retak Pertujuh," honours Yaman's legacy.

Artists participating in this exhibition will be inspired by Yaman's artistic movement, integrating elements showcased in his artworks.

Aspiring and experienced artists are free to send in their art submissions until March 10, 2024.

MERAKI group exhibition (May 16 - July 14, 2024)

Continuing the artistic journey, MERAKI, a group exhibition featuring six potential artists, follows the Khas Category Winner of KPTNS 2022/2023.

Derived from the Greek term meaning 'self essence,' MERAKI allows artists to showcase their strengths in the art arena.

Datuk Yaman's Perspective exhibition (July 18 - October 2024)

A retrospective exhibition, scheduled from July to October 2024, commemorates Yaman's unparalleled contributions to Sabah's visual arts.

Beyond being an artist, Yaman's role as a designer for state government insignia, logos and apparel is highlighted.

His legacy, spanning from the late '50s, exemplifies a passion for art that continues to inspire.

KPTNS KE-39 exhibition (October until January 2025)

Closing the celebratory year, the KPTNS exhibition will showcase 90 selected artworks at divisional and state levels on the third floor of SAG.

The exhibition will take place after the opening ceremony and prize presentation.
