#Showbiz: Michelle Yeoh back in action role, this time for a TV series

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh is back playing a leading role in Chinese-American action-comedy TV drama series The Brothers Sun.

In the show created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu for Netflix, Yeoh, 61 plays the role of Taiwanese immigrant Eileen 'Mama' Sun, the mother of the Sun brothers Bruce (played by Sam Song Li) and Charles (Justin Chien).

The drama follows the story of pre-med student Bruce, whom has lived a fairly unremarkable life, until Charles (the brother he has not seen in 15 years) turns up and reveals that their father, Big Sun (Johnny Kou), is a triad boss in Taipei, and a mystery plot to assassinate him and the rest of the family is under way.

As Yeoh's fans are already familiar with her previous roles in both Hollywood and Hong Kong action productions, Yeoh's role in this series is more than just a mahjong-playing Auntie.

In a recent Harper's Bazaar interview, Yeoh was quoted as saying: "I don't want to be playing the same characters over and over again.

"You'll be bored, I'll be even more bored, and it's not challenging in that sense.

"But with Eileen, I have not played a character like this (before), where a mother has sacrificed so much.

"She has to go down so low to be able to come back up again, so that she could save at least one of her children."

The series is now available on Netflix.
