#Showbiz: I always think of my son and miss him dearly, says Zaiton Sameon

KUALA LUMPUR: Last Wednesday marked the 34th anniversary of the death of singer Zaiton Sameon's only child.

The 67-year-old singer lost her 13-year-old son Azirwan Abu Bakar in a car accident at Batang Kali, Selangor on Feb 21, 1990.

The accident which also claimed the life of musician Ismail Shaari occurred when Zaiton was travelling back to Kuala Lumpur after a concert in Kuala Ketil, Kedah.

Zaiton, who suffered serious injuries and was in a coma for three months, said in an interview with Berita Harian Online yesterday that she still missed Azirwan and always thought of him.

"I miss Azirwan most whenever Ramadan is near, as I fondly remember breaking the fast with him," said Zaiton, adding that her son loved spicy Negri Sembilan dishes such as masak lemak cili api.

Zaiton added that Azirwan's death anniversary was a day before the death anniversary of her idol and close friend Datuk Sudirman Arshad, who died on Feb 22, 1992.

"They are two men who are very special in my life, and losing them left a great hole in my heart."

Zaiton, who lives in Ampang, occasionally visits her son's grave in her hometown Rembau, Negri Sembilan. Azirwan is buried next to Zaiton's late parents.

"The accident caused me to suffer memory loss for some years. However, I have slowly regained my memory when it comes to songs," said Zaiton who is able to remember all of her singles, especially the popular Menaruh Harapan.

"During Ramadan I get occasional invites to perform at private events. However, I prefer to spend more time reciting the Quran during the holy fasting month," said Zaiton.
