#Showbiz: Sudirman once proposed to me: Zaiton Sameon

KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran singer Zaiton Sameon has claimed that the late King Of Entertainment Datuk Sudirman Arshad once proposed to her.

In a recent interview with radio station Sinar, Zaiton said that Sudirman was her close friend and he might have been joking about the marriage proposal back then in the 1980s.

"Nevertheless I told him it was a 'no' as I felt that we were not compatible, and he accepted it," said Zaiton.

Zaiton also revealed that Sudirman composed the song Lupakan Saja for her after she told him about the end of her marriage to a police officer.

"That song was his advice to me to stay strong in the face of life's challenges. He was a true friend, a kind soul and gem of a person whom I will always miss."

Zaiton and Sudirman had plans to work together on a new song but it did not materialise as a result of the horrific car accident which befell her in 1990.

"That accident in Batang Kali, Selangor got me out of the music industry for a while, as I suffered memory loss for sometime," said Zaiton, 67 who lost her 13-year-old son Azirwan Abu Bakar in the car crash.

Sudirman died at the age of 37 in 1992, two years after Zaiton's accident.

In September last year, Zaiton received financial assistance from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the government to ease her financial burden which was caused by a lack of singing opportunities during the two-year Movement Control Order (MCO) from 2020 to 2022.
