#Showbiz: Ramadan in jail was hard - Ameng

KUALA LUMPUR: Rock singer Wan Aminuddin Wan Ismail or Ameng of Spring said that his five years in jail for drug possession from 2011 to 2016 saw him experience his harshest of fasting months.

"Celebrating Ramadan in jail was hard. Sahur was always at 11pm, and everybody had to eat, else we would have to go hungry," he said in a news report yesterday.

"Inmates rushed to get their food, and I would get pushed around."

Ameng also said that the prison wardens were very strict and often punished them for "indiscipline" while getting their food.

"My experience in prison was not all that bad, though. It was during Ramadan that I learnt to recite the Quran thrice, and that made my Ramadan special," said Ameng.

Ameng added that he focused on mastering Quran reading during his free time, and read the holy book every 10 days.

"We should all look at Ramadan as a time to get closer to God, and we should also think of each Ramadan as our last, so that we make it a month to focus on improving ourselves for the hereafter."

Ameng was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment and 10 strokes of the rotan by the Melaka Sessions Court for three drug-related offences on April 12, 2011.

He underwent his jail sentence and caning in the Kluang Prison, Kluang, Johor and was released early for good behaviour in June 2016.

In October 2016, Ameng participated in the reality show Gegar Vaganza Season 3 and won the fourth prize.
