The hallmarks of healthy children

CURIOSITY and creativity are hallmarks of a normal child. The child who's eager to explore and fascinated by new concepts is displaying healthy traits.

Malaysian parents hope their kids will start to develop creativity and curiosity at an early age.

Based on a survey conducted recently on social media with over 600 mums and dads as respondents, more than 44 per cent of parents encourage their children to pick their own outfits at ages 4-6.

The study, by lifestyle e-commerce brand, Oxwhite, shows that 8 out of 10 parents encourage their kids to pick their own outfits as a way of developing creativity.

"Creativity is using imagination to create. Letting kids pick their own outfits is one of the ways to develop problem-solving skills and explore their world curiously. It can train their critical thinking skills and the ability to self-regulate," says The Mind Faculty art psychotherapist, Reena Clare.

She adds that parents can introduce creativity from infancy through to any stage of their child's development.

The study also found that 40 per cent of children usually spend 1-3 hours online per day based on the observation of their parents.

"Kids are adapting to the current norm and are more tech savvy. We also observed that half the respondents agreed on the need for kids to have a good balance between online and offline activities," says OxWhite founder, CK Changr.

In order to develop a creative and curious child, now is the time for us to look into their creative development, adds Reena. Parents can get their kids involved in various activities such as salt dough sculptures, chalk drawing on the pavement or building toys, but at all times allowing them to lead the experience.

Oxwhite has also launched the #Ox-traordinary Kids Campaign to foster creativity among kids. In conjunction with the campaign, it will be introducing "Letting Kids be Kids", a parenting e-book for both parents and children.

The e-book is available on the Oxwhite website and parents can access it for free by downloading it.

The brand will also be partnering with The Mind Faculty to host an Instagram Live session on Oxwhite's official Instagram account on Aug 7 at 1pm.

The interactive session is aimed at highlighting the need to develop kids' creativity. Parents are invited to join and share their parenting challenges.

As part of the campaign, Oxwhite has also introduced a new children's collection, themed "100% Kids Basic". The range will be available on its official website and on both Shopee and Lazada.
