BUTTERWORTH: The KTM Komuter shuttle train service, linking three states in the northern region, began operations today.
The first train left from Gurun, Kedah to Kamunting, Perak at 5.16am and the first train from Kamunting to Gurun at 5.25am.
There are 11 stops along the route.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) president Lt Col (Rt) Sarbini Tijan said seven trains each would operate from Gurun and Kamunting daily.
"This is another important milestone we achieve today... This is only the beginning.
"We will see the response from commuters to decide whether there is a need to increase the train frequencies," he told reporters at the Bukit Mertajam train station where he earlier accompanied pressmen on a trip from Butterworth.
Sarbini said the KTM Komuter shuttle train service would complement the existing Electric Train Service (ETS) from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar, Perlis on July 10.
He said the stops for the KTM Komuter shuttle train service were different from ETS and other rain services.
Meanwhile, Sarbini said with more trains plying the northern routes, he urged the people not to use the tracks as a short cut to get from one place to another.
He also cautioned those from going near the platform
Also present were KTM Komuter general manager and KTM Komuter northern Region manager Rasul Yahaya.
