Ricoh helps protect mangroves

RICOH (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd collaborated with Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) for the fourth year running to help restore and protect the mangrove forest at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park.

The programme, Much About Mangroves, which was introduced in 2011, has been an educational endeavour for Ricoh’s employees and customers as they get the chance to plant mangrove saplings and tour the park to learn about the importance of mangroves to the ecosystem.

Ricoh total quality management manager Ong Kian Seng said the programme received encouraging response from its employees and customers and over 1,000 mangrove trees have been planted through the programme.

“We have made the participants plant mangrove trees since 2011 but we never educate them about the importance of mangrove.

“But this year, instead of planting mangrove trees, we decided to tour the park so that the participants would be able to see firsthand the diversity and richness of the flora and fauna and understand the importance of mangrove trees to the eco-system and how they affect the lives and habitats of other flora and fauna.

“This way, we hope the programme would have a bigger impact on the participants and that they would appreciate mangrove trees and the nature even more.

“We hope to collaborate with MNS for many years to come,” said Ong.

He added there were 50 participants for this year’s programme.

The participants visited the mangrove trees, some of which were planted in the previous years, padi nursery, sweet corn farm and finally experienced a boat ride with the cockle fisherman in the Sungai Buloh Fishing Village.
