Wee Kiong ready to shine

NATIONAL men’s doubles player Tan Wee Kiong has vowed to give a good show at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games to ensure Malaysia’s domination continues.

Wee Kiong and Goh V Shem are Malaysia’s current best pair, following their perfect record at the Thomas Cup finals in New Delhi in May.

“This will be our first Commonwealth Games, and surely there is a lot of pressure, but that will not bring us down.

“V Shem and I have been training really hard because we know how important the men’s doubles title is to Malaysia.

“We will do our best to make sure we continue this tradition at the Commonwealth Games,” Wee Kiong said.

The 25-year-old said his combination with V Shem is a work in progress and they have a long way to go before they can catch up with South Korean and Indonesian pairs.

“We are still new, but day by day we are improving. I’m sure that we will get there.”

Meanwhile, the national squad’s preparation for the Games suffered a minor setback, following lighting failure at Juara Stadium.

The problem has been occurring for the past one week, forcing the players to train at the Kayu Ara badminton hall.

“We have, however, made arrangements for the players to train outside of Kiara, and it should not really affect our Commonwealth Games preparation,” said BA of Malaysia secretary Ng Chin Chai. By Fabian Peter
