SHOWBIZ: Classical guitar fest

THE premiere Tarrega Malaysia International Classical Guitar Festival 2014 takes place next month.

Named after the prolific 19th Century guitarist Francisco Tarrega, it is a chance for local aspiring classical guitarists to show their potential to an international audience. The performers include the SF Duo and Dr Nathan Fischer (United States), Ogmundur (Iceland) and Zhuraini Jihat (Malaysia).

It is organised by Tarrega Music Resources, which previously organised concerts for foreign artistes such as Thu Le (Vietnam), Samuel T Klemke (Germany), Francisco Arief (Indonesia) and Grigory Novikov (Russia).

TMR has also conducted master classes for classical guitar students and with world renowned guitarists Huang Jia Wei of Taiwan, Klemke and Pavel Steidl of the Czech Republic serving as tutors. The event’s director is Lim Hock Siong, who graduated from the Malaysia Institute of Art and received a diploma in Performance from Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the UK.

He established the Klang Pin Hwa High Schools Choir in 1992 and three years later founded Tarrega.

Lim has served as chairman of the Seremban Chung Hua Alumni Choir, conductor for the Lovely Melodies Choir and the Tarrega Guitar House Guitar Ensemble.
