Khalid refuses to back down without a fight

SHAH ALAM: Refusing to back down without a fight, Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim told his party leadership that any attempt to remove him from the post must be made through the state constitution.

Khalid said in a statement that if PKR leadership is adamant to place Datin Seri Wan Azizah Ismail as the new menteri besar, it they should follow the state laws.

"I believe that anyone who wishes to participate in the effort of appointing a new menteri besar must follow the law and follow the various process required for it to take place.

"Until the candidate, Wan Azizah, has taken all the necessary steps to be the next menteri besar, I will continue my work with the state government as entrusted by the people of Selangor who had appointed me through legal means.

"At the same time, I hope the people will stay calm and not be moved with provocations, falsehood and rumours spreading the name of power by certain people.

"We have to remember that Selangor has its own set of laws that needs to be followed and respected. Thus any form of power transition would be within the prescribed laws," he said.

Khalid also reassured the people that the state's administration and performance will not be affected by the controversy and power struggle within the party.

On Monday night, opposition de facto leader and Selangor's economic adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the candidacy of Wan Azizah to replace Khalid as the menteri besar despite the fact that Khalid had only serve the first year of his second term.

Wan Azizah, who is also Anwar's wife is the current president of PKR and was recently voted as a state assemblywoman for Kajang in a highly-controversial political maneuvre termed as 'Kajang Move'.

Khalid, meanwhile, last week had reiterated that he would continue to serve the people of Selangor until the end of his term that is expected to end in another four years.
