26 immigrants feared drowned near Muar

JOHOR BARU: A boat, believed to be ferrying illegal immigrants, has capsized at about 15 nautical miles southwest from Tanjung Ketapang in Muar.

About 28 passengers, were reported to be in the boat at 11.20am today.

Two of the victims have since been saved by a cargo ship which was in the area.

MMEA southern region operation chief Captain Ibrahim Mohamed said early reports revealed that the MSC Valeria cargo ship managed to save two victims.

"From initial information, we believe 28 people were in the boat," he said.

Ibrahim said MMEA has activated its emergency response team and two speedboats have been despatched to the location.
