BADMINTON: No advantage for scratch pairs

NATIONAL shuttler Lim Khim Wah believes that Malaysia’s men’s doubles are not strong enough for the World Championships in Copenhagen on Aug 25-31.

Khim Wah, who will be reunited with his former partner Goh V Shem for the competition, admitted that the understanding among the pairs in the national set up are no longer the same since the reshuffling for the Thomas Cup Finals in New Delhi in May.

“At the moment I don’t have a permanent partner. V Shem has been paired up with Tan Wee Kiong, and they are doing well for themselves.

“The scratch pairs are doing well, but these are not the pairs who will compete at the World Championships,” said Khim Wah, who just recovered from dengue fever last week.

“The understanding among the players are different, and we don’t have much time to build that again from scratch for the World Championships,”

The 25-year-old, who won the Malaysia Open in January with V Shem, however, assured that each player will fight till the end, regardless of who they partner.

“V Shem and I are former partners, and so are the other two pairs. Wee Kiong will be reunited with Hoon Thien How, while Tan Boon Heong will partner Koo Kien Keat.

“We have not played together for some time now, but I believe that we will all fight and do the best we could at the World Championships.”

Khim Wah also said that it is up to coach Pang Cheh Chang to decide on who will be permanent partners after the World Championships.

“At the moment, I am quite comfortable training with Ow Yao Han and Chooi Kah Ming, but nothing has been confirmed.

“I will leave it to my coach to decide on my future partner.

“He (Cheh Chang), has informed us that he will finalise the men’s doubles pair after the World Championships.” By Fabian Peter
