MP: Cracks appearing in Pas

BALIK PULAU: The member of parliament here, Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya, has not ruled out the possibility of Pakatan breaking up over the Selangor menteri besar crisis.

He said there were already cracks in Pas when a majority of its members expressed support for Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to stay on as MB while there were others who were against.

“You can see the cracks in Pas. Its leaders hold different opinions. Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had expressed his support for Khalid but his deputy, Mat Sabu, and the party’s information chief Mahfuz Omar supported the Pakatan presidential council’s proposal to replace Khalid.

“There is a possibility of a breakup. In politics, nothing is impossible and anything can happen. We will wait and see,” he said on the sidelines of the Balik Pulau constituency’s Hari Raya open house at SMK Seri Balik Pulau here on Monday.

Hilmi was asked to comment on DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s statement that Pas’ refusal to respect and adhere to views agreed by Pakatan could lead to the break- up of the coalition.

Lim was quoted as saying that “if the decisions we have achieved together in the Pakatan’s highest leadership council is dismissed just like that by one party, the survival and credibility of Pakatan will continue to be undermined“.

His statement came on the heels of Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang saying that Khalid should not be replaced.

Pas deputy president Mohamad Sabu then reportedly dismissed Hadi’s view as his personal thoughts and not the party’s official position, as it would discuss the mater after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays.

Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has also thrown his support behind Khalid, questioning the reasons behind the latter’s possible removal from the post.

However, PKR had made it clear on Sunday that it would not budge from its decision to nominate party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as Khalid’s replacement.

PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution was quoted as saying that the top opposition leadership had agreed in principle to Khalid’s dismissal.
