Kedah govt needs RM50m for water treatment plant

ALOR STAR: The state government needs RM50 million to build a new water treatment plant in Pokok Sena to resolve the water woes in two districts in the state.

Water Supply and Resources Committee chairman Badrol Hisham Hashim said plans for its construction had already been submitted to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar when he visited Kedah, a month ago.

Badrol Hisham said he hoped that the plan would gain approval from the Federal Government and be included in the 11th Malaysia Plan.

He said at present both the Pokok Sena and Padang Terap districts were affected by the water shortage that hit the state and put a damper on the festive season.

“Some 3,000 people from seven villages are having water supply problems and the nearest water treatment plant is in Kuala Nerang,” said Badrol Hisham.

“At present, the state government has 26 water treatment plants with water coming in from Sungai Kedah, Sungai Muda, Sungai Kerian and Sungai Merbok which is under the administration of Syarikat Air Darul Aman or SADA,” he added.

The plants are located in the various districts like Padang Sanai, Kuala Nerang, Bukit Jenun Lama, Bukit Jenun Baru, Nami, Lubok Merbau and Sungai Limau.By Jasmime Kaur
