Robbery suspect bites policemen while resisting arrest

JOHOR BARU: A 29-year-old man turned aggressive by biting policemen and trying to snatch their weapons, in a bid to resist arrest on Tuesday (Aug 19).

The incident occurred at Jalan Sri Lanang in Kota Tinggi at about 9.30am when policemen stopped him, following a complaint lodged by a victim whose bag was snatched in front of a shophouse at Jalan Sutera in Taman Pelangi here at 7.15am on the same day.

Johor Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Hasnan Hassan said policemen decided to check on the man because he fitted the description provided by the victim.

The suspect, who had seven previous records for criminal and drug-related offences, was driving a Nissan Sentra which was reported stolen in Seri Alam.

Police also seized RM1,069, five handphones and tools used for housebreaking.

Following the arrest, police also arrested another man and two women in Kota Tinggi, believed to be members of the same gang.

All suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.

The suspects are being investigated under Section 392 of the penal code for robbery, while the man is also investigated under Section 332 of the same code for voluntarily causing hurt.

Police believed they have solved 16 snatch theft cases, four car-jacking cases and five motorcycle thefts with the arrest of the gang members.

Hasnan said some of the gang members are still at large.
