Sunway Group helps feed the hungry in 4 states

IPOH: MORE than 200 Sunway employees recently volunteered to pack 20,000 packages of nutritious meals for the Stop Hunger Now programme.

The event was held at the Sunway Lost World of Tambun, here, with the support and assistance of Sunway Group’s Leading with Passion 3.0 team, which was formed to carry out projects that reach out to and enrich the lives of underprivileged communities in the northern region.

The team helped the volunteers to assemble the dehydrated meals of rice, soy and vegetables packed with 21 essential vitamins and minerals.

Each package contains six servings. Each serving costs RM1 to produce.

The packing was completed with the volunteers working on two shifts of 45 minutes each.

Lost World of Tambun general manager Calvin Ho said: “This programme is a company initiative to engage the staff in team and charity work under Sunway Group’s corporate social responsibility programme.

“The food packages will be handed over to our beneficiaries — St Michael’s Church and four Orang Asli villages in Gopeng, Tapah, Bidor and Cameron Highlands. About 60 families will benefit from the food packages,” he said.

Leading with Passion 3.0 organising chairman Bernard Paul said Sunway’s Stop Hunger Now programme covered four states.

Perak is the third stop after Selangor and Johor. Penang is the next stop.

“We have 800 volunteers working to produce 100,000 packages for the four states.

“We have distributed about 40,000 packages to charity homes in Selangor, followed by 20,000 in Johor. We are also aiming for 20,000 in Penang.

“In Ipoh, the volunteers are from Lost World of Tambun hotel and theme park, The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat, Sunway College Ipoh, Sunway City Ipoh Group Security Division, and Sunway City Ipoh Property Division,” said Bernard.

Lost World of Tambun public relations executive Mazian Nawawi said the project was a good way to foster rapport between the staff.

Sunway Group communications executive Ang Sher Lyn said the programme helped to combat hunger while also enabling Sunway Group staff to reach out to the less fortunate.

Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organisation established in 1998 to coordinate the distribution of food and other life-saving aid to those in need in countries all over the world.
