MH17: Former BBC journalist among victims onboard plane

KUALA LUMPUR: Former BBC journalist Glenn Thomas has been identified as one of the victims who perished on board the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. 

A spokesman from Britain’s Foreign Office told the Mirror newspaper that the British national’s remains had been formally identified and his family members had been informed of the finding.

"We can confirm the formal identification of another British victim of Flight MH17 Glenn Thomas.

"His family have been informed. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time and we would continue to provide consular assistance to the family." the spokesperson said.

Thomas had left behind his partner Claudio and sister Tracey. 

The daily newspaper reported that the Thomas family planned to bring back his body to his hometown in Blackpool, northwest England.

The 49-year-old worked as a media officer for the World Health Organisation (WHO) and was traveling to Australia to attend an AIDS conference.

WHO spokesman Fadela Chaib said: "We have lost a wonderful person and a great professional. Our hearts are broken. We are all in shock."

Thomas was among 10 British nationals including a passenger with dual citizenship travelling on board flight MH17 with 288 other passengers and crew when it was downed over eastern Ukraine on July 17.
