PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has set Sept 25 as the polling date for the Pengkalan Kubur (N01) by-election.
Its chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof announced today that the nomination day would fall on Sept 13 while early voting would take place on Sept 21.
The by-election was called following the death of its state assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar on Aug 20 after a battle with liver cancer at 5.45am in a hospital in Guangzhou, China.
Nooz Zahidi’s body was brought home on Aug 22 and buried at 11.45pm at the Kampung Surau, Pasir Pekan cemetery the same day.
He had been the state assemblyman for Pengkalan Kubur for three terms and Tumpat Umno division head for four terms.
Noor Zahidi defeated his two opponents with a 1,736-vote majority, polling 10,174 votes against Saharun’s 8,438, while independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary obtained 65 votes.
Pengkalan Kubur has 24,097 voters.
