Oral hygiene book to be printed in Braille

JOHOR BARU: The State Health Department has revealed plans to publish a book on oral hygiene in Braille.

State Health and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said the books would be distributed to 14 schools and rehabilitation centres with visually-impaired children.

Ayub said the book would be jointly published by the department’s division of dentistry and SK Pendidikan Khas Princess Elizabeth, a school for the visually-impaired.

He said the project was initiated to educate the visually-impaired on the importance of oral hygiene.

“It is our mission to teach the importance of oral hygiene to all, and this includes the blind. This lesson has to be learnt at an early age.”

Ayub said the department intended to publish more health books in Braille in the future.

“There is a shortage of such informative health books in Braille. We need to inform the disabled of not only the need to maintain good oral hygiene with routine visits to the dentist checks and brushing, but also of the need for other regular medical check-ups,” he said. By Mary Victoria Dass
