Homemade popiah a big hit in Muar

MUAR: LOOKING for a delicious popiah? Try the Ori Popiarecipe scrumptious homemade spring rolls which come in a variety of flavours. However, the delicacy is only available here in the royal town of Bandar Maharani, Muar.

The spring rolls’ outer layer is made of wheat flour. The fillings are usually made of finely grated, steamed or stir-fried turnip, with a combination of ingredients that include vegetables, nuts and meat.

It is then dipped into a special mouthwatering Ori Popiarecipe sauce, to enhance the taste of the spring rolls.

Made from a special homemade recipe, Ori Popiarecipe spring rolls will definitely compel one to grab another bite.

Its proprietor Lokman Mahat, 48, said the family business, established five years ago, is a partnership which includes his wife Rosnaida Untong and their eldest son Muhd Shafiq Lokman, 21.

“In 2004, I was attached to a hotel as a front desk officer and I used to bring my wife’s popiah to work. Soon, my colleagues wanted some to take back home and to serve to their guests at functions. Later, I started getting orders from companies that patronised our hotel facilities to conduct seminars and meeting,

“Through word of mouth, more orders started pouring-in. I had to make a decision; to continue working in the hotel or quit and start a business venture, of which I chose the latter. What started from the comfort of our modest home has now grown to a thriving stall here in Jalan Sisi. We are appointed contractors for two caterers and we supply our delicacies for various functions and weddings,” Lokman said.

He explained that there are three types of spring rolls—Fried Crunchy, Sweet Chili, and Soft Moist. They also have Sardine Puffs and steam buns called Malaysia Mini Burger.

Priced at 50 sen each including the steam buns and puffs, the Ori Popiarecipe is best consumed within three hours of being served but can last longer if kept in a refrigerator.

Lokman said they have received orders nationwide but are currently concentrating their business in Muar as they want their products to be consumed fresh, to maintain its quality and taste.

“We hope to make Ori Popiarecipe a franchise business in the future but for now, our plan is to establish a café here so that we can make a variety of spring rolls for our customers with different sizes and fillings,” he said.

Ori Popiarecipe is at 57, Jalan Sisi, here. Operating hours are between 2pm and 6.30pm daily and closed on Sundays.

They serve only 1,000 pieces of spring rolls, puffs and steam buns a day.

Those with bulk or special orders can place their orders by calling 014-266 7920 or 012-746 2911.
