Elderly couple killed in crash

SHAH ALAM: An elderly couple were killed after their car fell into a drain in an accident near a wet market in Section 6 here.

Shah Alam traffic police chief deputy superintendent Goh Lee Shen said the victims were retired teachers, Abdul Manan Mohd Noh and his wife Siti Zabedah Arshad.

Both were 77 years old.

"Abdul Manan died on the spot while Siti Zabedah succumbed to her injuries at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah hospital (HTAR).

"In the 4.30pm incident, Abdul Manan was behind the wheel and believed to have lost control of his vehicle and rammed the car into a tree and green wired fence before it plunged into a 2.6 metre deep drain not far from where he had parked his car," said Goh.

Goh added that Abdul Manan had a history of high blood pressure and gout.

A fruit seller who only wanted to be known as Jamaluddin, 62, said he sensed something was not right when he saw Abdul Manan entering the car as his body was shaking.

"The driver's body was shaking when I saw him getting into his car.

"I suddenly heard a loud bang moments later and that was when I ran outside my shop and saw the car was already inside the drain," he said.

The son of the victims who refused to be identified was too distraught to talk to reporters but said that his parents went to the market together from their house in Section 3.

"I rushed here after I received a phone call from my neighbours who informed me about the accident," he said.

Police are looking for witnesses to assist in investigation and are urged to contact Inspector Hafiz at 03-55202202.
