JOHOR BARU: A freak storm on Friday caused severe damage to the roof of a house in Kampung Sepakat Baru here when strong wind blew several petai tree branches on to it.
The branches of a petai tree, next to Zaliah Seniman’s house had snapped during the storm causing a huge gap on her roof-top.
“I had a bad feeling after hearing a loud thunderclap followed by a loud cracking sound. Suddenly, the roof caved in and there were petai tree branches everywhere,” she said.
Zaliah said she was thankful that no one was injured in the incident although two infants, which she had been taking care of had minor injuries from the fallen debris.
Zaliah said now her house had a huge hole and she feared that the rainy days would wet her entire house.
Kempas village headman Salim Daud said the roof would be fixed as the villagers had collected funds through the Kampung Sepakat Baru Disaster Fund. He said RM8,000 has been collected to fix the damaged house.
“We will organise a gotong-royong among the villagers to fix the new roof for the family,” he said. By Mary Victoria Dass
