Domestic PPI for September up 0.6pc

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's domestic Producer Price Index (PPI) for September rose 0.6 per cent to 126.2 from 125.5 in the same month last year, the Statistics Department said today.

Month-on-month, the domestic PPI increased 0.2 per cent from 126.0 in August. This was due to an increase in the PPI for local production by 0.3 per cent and a fall in the import price index by 0.1 per cent.

"A year-on-year comparison showed the PPI for the domestic economy index rose by 0.6 per cent, with the local production index and import price index moving up by 0.5 per cent each respectively," the department said in a statement today.

The PPI for local production rose by 0.3 per cent in September as compared with the previous month, mainly due to a positive change in one category -mining.

Meanwhile, the import price index fell by 0.1 per cent in September 2014 as compared to August the same year.

The decrease was attributed to the lower prices of good transacted by importers for seven commodity sections, namely, animal and vegetables oils and fats, mineral fuels, lubricants, miscellaneous transaction and commodities, machinery and transport equipment, manufactured goods, chemicals and food.

As compared with the same month of the preceding year, the import price index for September 2014 moved up 0.5 per cent to 113.2 from 112.6.

An increase in prices was found in four commodity sections comprising machinery and transport equipment, food, miscellaneous manufactured articles plus beverages and tobacco.

Month-on-month, the import price index decreased by 0.1 per cent from 113.3 in August, due to the negative change reported by the index for crude materials for further processing and intermediate materials supplies and components.-- Bernama
