SHAH ALAM: Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan has retired as Shah Alam's mayor, 31 months after he first ran for office on Apr 1, 2011.
"I am very happy because all my officers and staff worked very hard and showed strong team work,"said the Shah Alam's sixth mayor to reporters during a farewell ceremony held by MBSA staff members at Wisma MBSA here, today.
Jaafar also added that the achievements he gained is reflected through the success of the projects organised by MBSA such as Shah Alam Clean Zones, Shah Alam Trees for Life, Section 19 Park and Ride project, community libraries as well the the 10 kilometer jogging and cycling tracks around the city.
"The jogging and cycling tracks for instance are just some examples of our team's success and I hope cycling will be a culture for Shah Alam residents in the future," he added.
In his farewell speech, Jaafar reminded MBSA staff to honour their profession and civil servants and to continue working hard with good integrity.
He also urged people in Shah Alam to play their roles and not only to leave everything to the authority when it comes to maintaining the city's cleanliness.
"I appeal to them to play their roles in making this city a clean city to live in and to not not only to leave all the work to the authority.
"This is a two way effort between the residents and the authority and positive attitude is the key to ensure everything runs smoothly," he said.
"We spent more than RM 80 million just for waste management. Imagine the impact we could get if everybody manages their home waste responsibly. We could spend the amount to other community development programs.
Jaafar began his service as a government servant on Apr 10, 1980 and is known by his staff members as someone who is highly dedicated, strict yet gentle.
He is also well known as someone who has also never taken any sick leave and is quite popular among Facebook users especially Shah Alam Residents Facebook page.
