MRT project on track to finish in 2017

KUALA LUMPUR: The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Sungai Buloh-Kajang line project is progressing as scheduled with completion at 55.21 per cent as of Oct 31.

Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) chief executive officer Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid said the project was on track to finish in 2017 at the year-end project progress update.

“We have completed 26km of our elevated guideway spans. Some sections have been handed over to our trackwork contractor to begin track installation.

“As for piling, five out of eight elevated work packages had been completed while pier construction had been completed in two packages,” he said, adding that the progress of the elevated section now stood at 45.5 per cent.

On the underground package, which covered tunneling and underground stations, he said work progress stood at 70 per cent.

“As of now, all tunneling for our 9.5km underground alignment has been completed except for 1.2km of tunnel between Pudu Launch Shaft and Pasar Seni MRT Station.

“We should be completing all our tunneling works by the end of next year’s first quarter,” he said.

Azhar said the construction of permanent structures at all seven stations had begun.

“We are proud to have captured the essence of each location in the interior design of the stations,” he said.

On the project’s financial situation, Azhar said to date, 78 work packages with a total value of RM21bil have been awarded with seven work packages left to go.

An estimated 1.2 million commuters will be served upon completion of the 51km Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line.

Azhar also announced the final names of the stations, which had been approved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He said the earlier provisional names were determined prior to the public display of the line in 2012.

“After obtaining public feedback, the proposed alignment underwent changes resulting in some station locations being changed.

“However, the original names were maintained, resulting in stations having names that did not reflect their locality,” he said.

Stations whose names have been fixed are: Sungai Buloh, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Pusat Bandar Damansara, Semantan, Pasar Seni, Cochrane, Maluri, Taman Suntex, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Bandar Kajang and Kajang,
