Dr M attends assembly after all

FORMER prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad attended the opening of the 68th Umno General Assembly here despite not feeling well.

He had recently posted in his blog that he may not be able to attend the assembly because of health reasons.

The former party president arrived at the Putra World Trade Centre with his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, and was escorted to a front seat at Dewan Merdeka in the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

Dr Mahathir was greeted with loud cheers from the 2,700 delegates when Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor announced his arrival.

Asked to comment on party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s policy speech, he said: “It is about solidarity.”

Before leaving the premises after Najib’s speech, he declined to answer other questions, as he said that he “was feeling a little bit under the weather”.

Afterwards, Dr Mahathir’s son and Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, said his father was suffering from cough and had to attend the funeral of his former bodyguard’s wife.
