Saifuddin says the Dr M he knew disliked attending assemblies

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has sympathised with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his undaunting act of attending the 'Himpunan Selamatkan Rakyat' assembly yesterday despite his fragility.

The home minister said that seeing the former prime minister being part of the assembly at Istana Negara was unlike the Dr Mahathir that he knew.

"It was taboo for the Dr Mahathir whom I know to participate in an assembly. He really does not like assemblies.

"I sympathise with his 'keuzuran' (decreptitude), but he braved himself and walked with the participants," Saifuddin said at the ministry today.

Dr Mahathir was among 1,000 participants of the assembly at Gate 2 of Istana Negara.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid had said the assembly failed to comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

He said the organisers had been identified and will be summoned to have their statements recorded.
