Team Epic Glow have some bright ideas for Masters of Rev Up

A VIEW of runners with neon glowsticks against Singapore’s skyline caught the attention of Adibah Shahrum and Ligar Anggara Pangestu on a visit to the city state last year. This unique sight formed the foundation of the students’ entry in this year’s Masters of Rev Up 2014.

“I imagined a huge colourful crowd glowing like fireflies with awesome music blasting in the background. It was such an exciting idea which made us want to share this concept of a fun run here,” say the two students who lead Epic Glow — Universiti Teknologi Petronas’ (UTP) representatives at the 2014 Masters of Rev Up.

The UTP Glow Run which will see marathon enthusiasts running with glowsticks while enjoying glow-in-the-dark games and refreshments takes place at the campus in Tronoh, Perak at 8pm today. The event is the effort of Adibah and Ligar who amassed the help of 52 other students as part of Team Epic Glow.

“In the beginning, the team members only consisted of the two of us. But after we did some recruitment exercises, we now have members who are handling aspects of the event like games and activities, food and beverage, the ceremony and protocol for the actual event, welfare aspects, logistics and publication materials as well as promotion and public relation sections,” they say.

The biggest challenge, they reveal, was sponsorship. “We received sponsorship from Revive, however it is still insufficient since glow-in-the-dark materials are expensive,” adding that the timeline of their course structure clashed with the tight deadline set in Masters of Rev Up. The struggle, however, paid off when the team was selected as one of the Top 16 teams.

“We learnt that this event won’t be a success without help, trust and teamwork; these three are the fundamental keys of a leader. If the leader keeps doing things on his own, it will cause a gap between the members and they will become clueless when facing a problem,” says team Epic Glow.

Adibah and Ligar add that the Masters of Rev Up boot camp was the most important aspect of the process. “We really learnt a lot from the boot camp, especially how to promote the event since our target was 1,000 participants. That is a great number of runners! However, that is where we truly appreciate the existence of the boot camp — it provided us a better insight on how to find a solution using the right approach to make our event successful.”

Revive Isotonic’s Masters of Rev Up 2014 is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programme. It is an opportunity for students to experience and execute an event on their own and managing all aspects of an event such as marketing, logistics, financing and human resources.

It has attracted more than 4000 entries from institutions of higher learning in the country. Out of these entries, 16 finalists were chosen for their best “Rev’d Up” ideas to compete in the grand finale.

The winner of this year’s Masters of Rev Up 2014 challenge will win RM10,000 and a ‘Rev-up Zone’ make-over in their university, complete with a foosball table. The winner also stands the chance to have an internship opportunity with Permanis Sandilands.
