Perma shed some light on Sri Saradha Devi Illam orphanage

KUALA LUMPUR: Thirty girls from the Sri Saradha Devi Illam orphanage in Rawang are beginning to see some light in their lives thanks to the generosity of the Selangor and Federal Territory Ceylonese Social Services Association (Perma).

Apart from providing the girls food provisions, school uniforms and shoes, Perma has initiated tuition classes to uplift their educational achievements and impart vocational skills, to offer them a chance to climb the social ladder.

Thus far, Perma has contributed RM12,000 in tuition fees alone.

Thanks to the effort, three girls excelled in their studies to win top academic prizes in public school exams. Two other girls managed to secure tailoring jobs.

“It is our hope that the initiatives will assist them in adulthood and avoid falling into the traditional social trap of poverty,” said Perma spokesperson Anusuyah Selvadurai, after its committee members paid a visit to the home recently.

Present was Perma president A. Gnanarajah.

She added that her association members had in the past taught the girls baking skills, held motivational workshops, gave career guidance and counseling.
