Council: Get your dogs licensed

GEORGE TOWN: THE Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) urged dog owners to get licenses for their dogs or risk getting fined.

MPPP public health and licensing councillor Sukumar Subramaniam said the Penang Municipal Council by-law (Dogs) 1977, was clear on the matter and errant owners can be slapped with a fine of up to RM250.

Sukumar said currently, only 33 per cent of dog owners in the island possess licences.

“I urge dog owners to be more responsible and apply for the licences.

“Errant owners could face a fine between RM100 and RM250 if their dogs are found without the licences attached to its collar.

“The licence fee is only RM10 yearly,” he said.

Sukumar also reminded owners of dog breeds such as Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Doberman, Bullmastiff, Bull Terrier and Perro De Presa Canario to obtain special permits from MPPP and the Veterinary Services Department as they were categorised as restricted dogs.

Sukumar said that veterinary unit enforcement officers would conduct frequent checks in all neighbourhoods and dogs spotted without collars will be taken away by the local council.

MPPP will impose a fine on the dog owners before they can take home the pets.

Sukumar said that dog owners who leave their pets unsupervised, allow them to bark continuously, feed them improper food, inflict any form of torture and those who do not comply with the vaccination requirements will face a maximum fine of RM2,000 and one’s year imprisonment upon conviction.

Dog breeds which are prohibited in Malaysia are Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, Neopolitan Mastiff, Japanese Tosa, Akita, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brazilliero.
