MET issues 3rd category warning on strong winds, rough seas and thunderstorms

KUALA LUMPUR: The Meteorological Department (MET) has issued a third category warning on strong winds, rough seas and thunderstorms.

The warning issued at 10.13am, included Section A, a warning for Malaysian waters and Section B, a warning for shipping.

"Strong North-easterly winds over 60kmph and rough seas with waves up to 5.5 metres occurring over the waters off Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, East Johor, Sarawak, Sabah (interior, West Coast and Kudat) and Labuan are expected to continue until Wednesday, Dec 24.

"This condition of strong winds and rough seas is dangerous to all coastal and shipping activities including workers on oil platform.

"In addition, the coastal areas of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and East Johor are vulnerable to sea level rise until Wednesday,” reads the Section A warning.

MET also updated its thunderstorm warning by stating thunderstorms activities are expected to continue until late afternoon over the waters off Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Malacca, West of Johor, Terengganu and Pahang. The condition may cause strong winds over 50 kmph and rough seas with waves up to 3.5 metres and dangerous to small boats.

"At the same time, strong winds over 60 kmph and rough seas with waves more than 4.5 metres is dangerous to all coastal and shipping activities including workers on oil platform."

Section B, a warning for shipping included a warning for strong winds, rough seas and also thunderstorms.

"Strong North easterly winds over 60 kmph and rough seas with waves up to 5.5 metres occurring over the water of Samui, Tioman, Condore, Bunguran, Reef North, Reef South, Kuching, Layang-layang, Labuan and Pahlawan are expected to continue until Wednesday.

"Strong Northeasterly winds of 40-50 kmph with waves up to 3.5 metres occurring over the waters of Phuket are expected to continue until Wednesday, Dec 24.

"This condition of strong winds and rough seas is dangerous to small crafts, recreational sea activities and sea sports."

"Thunderstorm activities occurring over the waters off Straits of Malacca are expected to continue until late afternoon today. This condition may cause strong winds over 50 kmph and rough seas with waves up to 3.5 metres and dangerous to small boats."says MET.
