KUALA LUMPUR: All agencies and assets have been directed to carry out an effective flood relief activities said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
In his latest posting on Facebook, he said this is in view of the worsening flood situation.
“I want all agencies and departments to implement all the plans which have been prepared to assist flood victims and that their welfare is looked after,” he said.
The number of flood victims in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perak, Perlis reached 78,498, around midnight, compared to 66,029 on the evening of Dec 23.
Meanwhile Bernama reports that most overland public transport services have been disrupted following severe floods which hit the East Coast and northern peninsular states.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) cancelled all train services plying the East Coast route since last Monday for the safety of passengers.
KTM Corporate Communications manager, Siti Badariah Wan Hanafi the interruption of services was expected to continue until Friday.
"However, the north-south routes are not affected and ticket sales are on as usual. We have sold out the tickets for travel on Sunday for the north-south destinations," she said when contacted today.
Meanwhile, Konsortium E-Mutiara operations officer, Mohammad Anuar said the company's transport services for the Kota Baharu-Klang Valley route were operating as usual as the buses travelled on roads not affected by the floods.
However, the bus services from Kota Baharu to Alor Setar and Penang had been cancelled due to the closure of the East-West Highway from Gerik to Jeli following a landslide at Kilometre 63, near the Titiwangsa rest area, last night, he said.
Konsortium Transnasional Berhad is also taking similar steps in cancelling temporarily transport services from all locations to Kelantan due to the flood situation.
In contrast, an AirAsia Bhd spokesman said the low-cost airline had not been affected and there had been no flight disruptions due to the floods.
