Flood: More sub-stations closed, TNB strives to restore power

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has suspended operations of 2,473 sub-station’s in states affected by floods as of 9am today.

In a statement, it said that this figure increased from 1,318 sub stations from yesterday.

TNB Senior General Manager for power distribution (Region 2 Operations) Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid said 1,845 sub-station’s are in Kelantan, 152 in Terengganu, 403 in Pahang and 73 in Perak.

“Ceasation of operations is to prevent short-circuit,” he said.

Abdul Aziz who is also the TNB’s Flood Management Chief Coordinator said in areas where flood waters have receded, 401 sub stations have been reactivated.

This includes 245 in Kelantan, 34 in Terengganu, 102 in Pahang and 20 in Perak.

Until 9am today, the temporary stoppage of the sub-stations involved 155,383 consumers, increasing from 150,852 consumers yesterday evening.

The number of affected consumers in Kelantan stood at 128, 220, Pahang (18,985), Terengganu (5,833) and Perak (2,345).

Abdul Aziz said more than 1,000 TNB personnel have been deployed in Kelantan, Perak and Terengganu.

“Apart from monitoring the sub stations, TNB facilities are also used in helping with evacuation of flood victims to relief centres,” he said.

Meanwhile, TNB is utilising 70 generator sets of 500kW to 1,000kW to supply electrical power to the affected states.

Abdul Aziz said 45 of the generator sets had been deployed to Pahang, 19 in Terengganu, Perak (5) and one in Kelantan.

“Three generator sets are in the process of being sent to Kelantan. We are facing difficulties in sending the generator sets to Kelantan due to the bad flood situation and impassable roads,” he said.

He adds that the generator sets are for areas deemed important and flood relief centres which is passable by vehicles.

“However, we will work with the authorities to ensure that areas which are in darkness will receive electricity supply as soon as the situation warrants it,” Abdul Aziz added.

He adds they are also in the midst of sending other generator sets, whether belonging to TNB or their business associates to the affected areas.

“In addition 22 portable generators have been supplied to flood relied centres so far,” he said.
