Regular teachers must serve as assistant headmasters before being promoted to headmasters: NUTP

KUALA LUMPUR: Regular teachers should not be promoted to headmasters if they have not served as assistant headmasters first.

The National Union of the Teaching (NUTP) said the union strongly opposed such practices as regular teachers might not have the necessary experience and administrative skills

"There have been a number of cases in the past and this year we received complaints of one such case," said union Secretary General, Lok Yim Pheng.

"We want the Education Ministry to investigate such cases where teachers are promoted to headmasters without going through the due process."

Lok said that in a meeting with the Education Ministry a few years ago, it was agreed that this practice would not be allowed.

Lok said that the teachers who were promoted to headmasters were given their promotion letters by the Education Ministry on the recommendation of the relevant State Education Department.

Lok said the union was not trying to prevent capable teachers from being promoted, but stressed they had to have the relevant experience and not just parachuted to the job of a headmaster.
