We are working towards getting Teluk Intan's Leaning Tower listed as world heritage site: Mah Siew Keong

IPOH: Steps are being taken to get Teluk Intan's iconic Leaning Tower to be listed as a world heritage site.

Teluk Intan Member of Parliament Datuk Mah Siew Keong said the proclamation of the 130-year-old tower as a National Heritage was a first step towards getting listed under Unesco.

"We are working towards getting the recognition," he said, adding that he had met Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz on the matter.

The iconic structure was declared a National Heritage during the national level Chinese New Year celebration recently.

Mah, who is also a minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said he had spoken to Teluk Intan Municipal Council on the need to spruce things up at the tower.

"I asked them to look into how to improve the system of going up the tower," he said.

He added the tower's proclamation as a National Heritage had generated much positive publicity.

On a separate matter, Mah said as part of the party's preparation to face the next general election; it was now identifying candidates to be fielded.

"We want our candidates to be ready and start going to the ground to work to ensure victory for the party," he said.

He said although there were concerns that the decision might not go down well with members, at least the party leadership still had time to assure them before the next election.

Mah added the party was confident of winning two parliament and two state seats.

In the 2013 general election, Gerakan lost three parliament and four state seats it contested.

The parliament seats it contested were Beruas, Taiping and Teluk Intan while the state seats are Canning, Aulong, Jalong and Kuala Sepetang.

It however won the Teluk Intan parliament seat following a by election last year after its incumbent Seah Leong Peng of DAP died.
