Penang parking coupons exempted from GST

GEORGE TOWN: Parking coupons under the local council here will remain unchanged as motorists do not have to pay for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) come April 1.

The New Straits Times received confirmation from the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) today that the parking operator, Perkhidmatan Alam Indah Sdn Bhd would absorb the six per cent GST imposed on them.

This means the current coupons -- comprising coupons for durations of 30 minutes, one hour, and day passes, ---are still valid after April 1.

The NST had reported yesterday that parking coupons under MPPP are likely to be exempted from GST.

MPPP financial management committee alternate chairman Joseph Ng Soon Siang told the NST that the operator had a meeting with the Customs Department officials yesterday (Thursday) to discuss the need to exempt motorists from paying GST.

"Both parties agreed not to pass the GST to customers and the coupon prices will remain status quo on April 1.”
