JOHOR BARU: A musical fountain at Taman Merdeka here is the latest attraction in the state’s capital city.

The recently crowned Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar who signed a plaque marking its official opening today, suggested for the fountain to build for the people to have a place for recreation activities.

His consort the Permaisuri of Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah and two of their six children Tunku Panglima Johor Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar also graced the event.

Also present were Johor Council of Royal Court president Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli, Johor speaker Datuk Mohamed Aziz, State Secretary Datuk Ismail Karim and the state’s executive council members.

Johor Baru City Council Mayor Datuk Abdul Rahman Mohamed Dewam said the musical fountain was the ruler’s idea to provide the park with added value.

He said the fountain will also double up as a tourists’ attraction.

“The musical will operate daily between 9pm and 9.30pm and 10pm and 10.30pm,” he said during the official opening.

Taman Merdeka officially launched in 2011 as a community recreational park. There are nine lawns with the 31 acres park inspired by the country's struggle for independence.

Each lawn depicts a chapter in the history of the country's fight for freedom.

There is also a man-made park, a restaurant and a jogging track within the park covered with greeneries.
