Education ministry review Islamic education syllabus

KUALA LUMPUR: Education Ministry is reviewing the Islamic Education (Pendidikan Islam) syllabus in schools, Dewan Negara heard.

Its deputy minister P. Kamalanathan said ministry's Islamic Education division was screening for any hint of deviated ideology in school text books, additional reading materials.

"The ministry is working with other government agencies like Jakim and states' religious department as well as carrying out its own preventive and rehabilitation measures.

"They include awareness campaigns in schools and universities through distribution of reading materials such as posters to remind students the correct Islamic teachings.

"Ceramah sessions were also carried out in collaboration with schools, education district and state department. Standard curricular for both primary and secondary schools are also being looked at."

He said other actions include monitoring and rehabilitation programmes for teachers and students found to have been influenced by the deviant teachings.
