Muhyiddin presents awards at Malaysian Golf Awards

PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin wants Malaysia to not only produce world class golfers, but also to be a global golfing destination.

He said, over the last decade or so, Asian countries like South Korea, India and Thailand excelled in the sport, adding that there was no reason Malaysia should not as well.

“Just this year, Indian star Anirban Lahiri won the Maybank Malaysian Open and his own national open as well,” he said at the Malaysian Golf Awards earlier.

He said there was no reason why Malaysia could not produce its own Anirban Lahiri or Thongchai Jaidee, who is from Thailand.

Muhyiddin presented the Merit Award for Services to Golf to Captain Eustace Van Gayzel and the Lifetime Achievement Award to Tun Hamid Omar. Van Geyzel’s daughter and Hamid’s grandson accepted the posthumous awards.

The Golf Club of the Year was won by the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC).
