Common time zone for Asean will benefit all: DPM

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed common time zone for the Asean capitals will stand to benefit all markets involved.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the time was ripe to execute such an initiative.

"The creation of a 'we feeling' among the peoples of Asean will see benefits in various ways - more solidarity, a boost in tourism and overall contribute significantly towards greater regional unity," he said tonight at the joint welcoming dinner for Asean foreign ministers and economic ministers.

Also present were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and Malaysia Central Bank Governor Tan Sri Zeti Aziz.

Muhyiddin acknowledged that the common time zone would trigger upheaval and discomfort.

"Malaysia went through this process more than 30 years ago, it took a bit of convincing but we can attest that the benefits it brings surpass the initial upheaval and discomfort."

Muhyiddin also said for Asean to move forward, the region must be guided by two principles namely creating a greater rules-based organisation and fortifying its resilience as well as effectiveness as an organisation.

"The geo-political shifts in the region and in wider world are indeed real and it is felt by all. It is how we response to them that shall determine our future."
