7 stranded during Gunung Jerai hike rescued

GURUN: Seven friends had a scare when they were stranded for seven hours after one of their friends suffered leg cramps while hiking up Gunung Jerai, here, yesterday.

State Fire and Rescue Department operation chief Mustafa Kamal Ahmad said seven of them aged between 20 and 26 began their journey from the Lembah Bujang Archaeology Museum in Merbok at 10am yesterday and after two hours, they were worn out and rested in Gunung Jerai.

Mustafa said they were about to continue their journey when one of their friends complained of leg cramps and following that, the group had to cease their hike.

“Two of them had to find help and they managed to get assistance from a hotel nearby, in Telaga Tok Sheikh.

“The department received a distress call at 11.55am and a team of eight firemen from Sungai Petani was dispatched to the scene,” he said, adding that they brought down all the victims at 3.53am today.

The victims were then sent to Yan Hospital for treatment.
