Breeding ground for excellence

NOT many students can be good at both the academics and co-curricular activities.

But students at the 128 High Performing Schools around the (HPS) country are proving this wrong. They are not only expected to excel in academic pursuits, but also take an active part in co-curriculum activities at both national and international levels while setting a benchmark.

Since 2010, HPS are regarded as a vital element in the educational National Key Results Area to boost the excellence of the country’s schooling system. Defined as schools with ethos, character and a unique identity which enable them to excel in all aspects of education, HPS set the benchmark for academic and non-academic achievement excellence for all schools in the country. HPS is not a new set of schools but a recognition or status accorded when schools attain the benchmark.

From the onset of the establishment of HPS, the Education Ministry granted such schools autonomy which includes tailoring benefits to enable them to excel further. However, it is each school's management, supported by the respective Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), that does the careful planning and selection of student activities that are hoped to be most impactful in breeding international calibre students.

Read about how SK Taman Tun Dr Ismail 1 and SMK Aminuddin Baki in Kuala Lumpur and SMK (P) Sri Aman in Petaling Jaya, Selangor - three schools in the first of five HPS cohorts - go about doing this in Learning Curve this Sunday (May 31).
