Parents need to pay more attention to their children: Kelantan police chief

KOTA BARU: Police believe that a lack of parental attention might be one of reasons that children in the state have been abducted.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said the finding was based on their investigations into several cases including the latest one involving three children from Jalan Bayam.

“Police investigation into the case showed that the parents of the three children were busy with their job and don’t spend enough time with their children. They don’t have time to talk to them, listen to them or find out about their problems. They simply don’t know them well enough.

“As a result, their children don’t get enough attention and go to other people thinking they can get what they need.

“This is how the get kidnapped as they are lured by strangers,” he told reporters after presenting a donation to 120 policemen who were victims of last year’s flood in Kelantan, at its headquarters, here, today.

On the three children who were abducted by a man last week, Mazlan said the two boys and the girl have been temporarily placed under the care of the state Welfare Department pending investigation.

“I was told that the Welfare department had placed them at two separates children’s homes in Kelantan.

“Police have already completed their investigation into the case and have forwarded the investigation paper to the prosecution.

“We are waiting for the prosecution and are deciding whether to charge the parents or not.

“Police have also recorded statements from the parents to facilitate investigation,” he said.

It was reported that police have rescued the three children who were kidnapped by a man for more than 48 hours at Jalan Bayam here last week. The children were saved by police outside the Sultan Muhammad V Stadium at 1.30am on May 26 after they were abducted about 11pm a day earlier.

Following the case, police have picked up a 29-year-old suspect and are expecting to charge him next week.
