Dewan Rakyat passes motion to debate Sabah quake

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat passed a motion to debate the Sabah earthquake today.

Datuk Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) in moving the motion suggested that the government consider creating new trail for Mount Kinabalu due to the damages on the existing one.

"We are saddened by the loss of lives and damages on our Mount Kinabalu that is now deformed after the earthquake on Friday with the magnitude of 5.9 Richter scale at the epicentre of about 16km from Ranau. Thus, new trail should be considered on the world heritage."

He also suggested that the mountain guides or Malim Gunung awarded incentives for their assistance in the Search and Rescue (SAR) efforts.

"The incentives may also assist the guides who have temporarily lost their income due to the closure of Mount Kinabalu," he said.

Bung also suggested that the federal and state government set up earthquake response centre to alert people on possible quakes in future.

Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said it was approved as it satisfied the requisites under the Parliamentary Standing Orders 18(1) which are specific issues of public interest and urgency, and set an hour debate from 4.30pm.
