70-year-old man nabbed for not fasting, eating near old cemetery

KUALA TERENGGANU: A man in his 70's was nabbed for not fasting during an operation codenamed Ops Puasa held by the Terengganu Islamic and Malay Customs Council (Maidam) enforcement officers in the district.

Maidam's commissioner Datuk Omar Musa said up to Monday, 51 operations were held statewide but only one person was arrested for not fasting and eating near an old cemetery in Jalan Pusara, here.

Sixteen operations were held in Kuala Terengganu, seven in Besut and Setiu, six in Hulu Terengganu and Marang, Dungun (4) and Kemaman (5).

"The man was taken to the Maidam's head office for further investigation under Section 19 of the Syariah Takzir Criminal Enactments 2001," he said adding that investigation paper was under process.

If convicted, the offender could face a fine up to RM1,000 or six months imprisonment or both.

Omar said this to reporters after receiving tithes from two corporate groups namely Malaysia National Cooperation Berhad (Angkasa) and Malaysia Building Society Berhad (MBSB) at the Maidam's head office today.

He said Angkasa contributed RM73,086 while MBSB handed over RM27,686 of their business tithes for 2014.

"The council has distributed RM51,598,209 of tithes collected to the poor and needy for the past six months," he said adding that a total of RM28.9 million distributed in the same period last year.
