Fewer civil servants PTPTN defaulters

PUTRAJAYA: The number of civil servants who borrowed from the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) has reduced to 138, 201 as of May from the 163,007 announced in April.

This is following the mandatory deductions for civil servants who are PTPTN borrowers, which was announced by the Public Service Department (PSD) recently.

PSD director-general Tan Sri Mohamad Zabidi Zainal said there are still 29,121 civil servants who have never made any payments while 109,080 are inconsistent payment makers, as of May.

In April, the number of civil servants who never made any payment is 32,803 while 130,204 were inconsistent with their payment, Zabidi said.

Zabidi, today presented the PTPTN letters with the list of all the borrowers to the ministries secretary-generals and chief secretary of states to instruct civil servants to pay their loans via pay cuts.

"I urge all the secretary-generals and chief secretary of states to use the same approach by the PSD in assisting the civil servants to repay their loans.

"I hope secretary-generals and chief secretary of states will take immediate action to ensure repayments are made properly without burdening the civil servants," he said at the PSD monthly assembly, here, today.

On July 6, PSD instructed 480 of its officers to have pay cuts for loan repayments beginning September.
